Odd Town Sign at Whitburn's Northern Approach

Before the M8 arrived in the 1960s, the A8 was the main traffic route between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The section of it than ran just North of Whitburn must have been purpose-built though, as it doesn't follow the route of any older roads, and was built at some point between 1914 and 1939. Presumably it roughly followed an already established route though, as the sign depicts a coach and horses, which you would think means that it was a scene synonymous with Whitburn for more than a few years before motorised transport took over. Being roughly halfway between the two cities there were probably a number of coach houses and inns in Whitburn in times gone by.
