Rodney Street Tunnel
Now reopened as a cycle path, the tunnel ran under Heriothill to the goods yard/coal depot at the bottom of Scotland Street. Briefly in the mid 19th century the railway ran right through to Canal Street Station on Princes Street (the site is now occupied by part of Waverley Station and the shopping mall on the site of Waverley Market).
The railway closed in 1967.

Rodney Street Tunnel
Looking south. The section in the foreground lies below the Broughton Road/Rodney Street/Canonmills/Eyre Place junction and it has been strengthened with sprayed concrete prior to the cycle path and walkway reopening on the 31st July 2009.

Northern end of the Heriothill (or Rodney Street) Tunnel
The view of the northern end of the Rodney Street Tunnel on the former northern suburban line from Scotland Street to Trinity and Granton.
The tunnel is relatively short, being just under an eighth of a mile in length. When the photograph was taken (2009) there were plans to reopen the tunnel for walkers and cyclists. Unauthorised access was restricted by way of a fence.
