Now reopened as a cycle path, the tunnel ran under Heriothill to the goods yard/coal depot at the bottom of Scotland Street. Briefly in the mid 19th century the railway ran right through to Canal Street Station on Princes Street (the site is now occupied by part of Waverley Station and the shopping mall on the site of Waverley Market). The railway closed in 1967.
