Often back streets are unkempt, disreputable and a dumping ground for rubbish. This, however, is in Morningside.

Braid Crescent
Nothing much moving on the side roads after 3 days of snow in late November - over 30cm, although a Met. Office spokesman was quoted as saying Edinburgh has 3.5inches!

Braid Crescent, Edinburgh
Unusually for Edinburgh, this 'Crescent' is actually crescent-shaped.
Although none of the buildings on the North side of the street are deemed worthy of listed building status, they do get a mention in the report on the Morningside Conservation Area, available online. Braid Crescent sits at the far SouthWest of the area and is described as having: "the grandest two storey bay windows in Edinburgh, each topped with an octagonal lead dome" It can be seen that not every single building has a dome, but enough do for them to catch the eye.
The houses went up in the late 19th Century.

Time and Tide
An interesting 'clock' at Craiglea Clocks on Comiston Road. The front face tells the normal time, the right hand face [out of sight] is a barometer, but the left hand face is a tide clock, that indicates the state of the tide [I presume in the Firth of Forth] - high, ebbing, low or flooding - and the phase of the moon. Alas, no longer there! I recently noticed [July 2011] that it was missing, and was told it needed too much maintenance, so it was sent to the tip - what a shame!

Pick a speed - there is a choice!
The City of Edinburgh Council is phasing in a city-wide 20 mph speed limit [24/7, which seems rather extreme]. The existing traffic calming policy of pot-holes, degraded road surfaces, speed bumps and chicanes is considered inadequate to keep traffic moving at a safe speed. They are currently putting up signs on 1 February in a zone where the speed limit will not apply until 28 February. The 30 mph sign is at the end of a school entrance 20 mph area [operating when children go to and leave school]. I wonder if they will take it down when it is no longer needed?
