Beetle Food on Wanstead Flats
In former times dead wood such as this would have been tidied away or used as fuel. However nowadays forestry practice is to leave some dead wood for invertebrates these break down the wood and also feed birds and other animals. Also standing wood rots differently to wood on the ground creating different habitats. Standing dead trees (if they are not a danger to the public) can be left as homes for bats and nest sites for birds. https://www.wansteadwildlife.org.uk/index.php/home/list-of-places?id=59
