Train at North Woolwich station on the last day (2)
Silverlink electric unit 313 116, named "Nikola Tesla", stands at North Woolwich forming a North London Line service to Richmond. This was the last day of operation before the line from Stratford to North Woolwich closed, hence the significant number of railway enthusiasts on the platform. The Stratford to Canning Town section of the line was incorporated into the Docklands Light Railway, whose King George V line (opened the previous year) effectively replaced the remainder of the route. More recently, part of the formation between Canning Town and North Woolwich has been reused for Crossrail.

Train arriving at North Woolwich
A suburban diesel multiple unit arriving at North Woolwich station in 1985, shortly before the line was electrified.
The North Woolwich branch closed in 2006. Part of the route has been reused by the Docklands Light Railway, between Canning Town and Stratford. Another section of the route, a tunnel beneath the Royal Docks, is being reused by Crossrail which will be a new east-west rail route across London. At North Woolwich, however, the route will not be reused by railway trains.

View southward to the buffer-stops: ex-GER terminus of the line from Stratford etc., which eventually closed 10/12/06 after conversion of most of it to the Woolwich branch of the Docklands Light Railway. The Museum closed in 2008.

Great Eastern Railway seat
This seat bearing the GER monogram was still in use in 1979 at North Woolwich station, by which time it must have been at least 66 years old, as the GER identity was lost in 1923.

North Woolwich station, 1986
This shows one of the ex-Southern Region '2-EPB' units which were working the Richmond to North Woolwich services at that time. For service here, the units had been fitted with small destination indicators, and also with window bars because of the limited clearance in Hampstead Tunnel. Eventually these units were replaced by Class 313 units, but now, North Woolwich station is closed and passengers make use of the nearby King George V station on the Docklands Light Railway.

North Woolwich Station
In 1985 a class 105 diesel multiple unit waits for departure time with a train to Camden Road in the last few months of diesel operation. Later in the year 3rd rail electrification would be completed and the services would operate direct from Richmond to North Woolwich using class 313 electric multiple units. Built by Cravens between 1956 and 1959, the class 105's were all withdrawn from passenger service in 1988.
North Woolwich station was closed in 2006 as the Docklands Light Railway provided a replacement service to the north of the station. To the right of the photo the tower blocks on Rymill Street are undergoing renovation whilst the one to the left, on Manwood Street, awaits its turn.
