Regent's Canal, Stepney in 2003
The group of people are members of Ashford (Kent) Ramblers who had travelled by minibus to Limehouse Basin for a 7-mile circular walk along canal towpaths (Limehouse Cut, Lee Navigation, Hertford Union Canal and Regent’s Canal). Here the group is watching a narrowboat leaving the lock. It is interesting to compare this view with that of Image which shows a new building is being erected to replace the one that can be seen behind the group. Also, beyond the bridge, the tower block was in the process of being erected when I took my picture.

Limehouse lock and DLR viaduct
One of the pair of locks is still in use to admit boats on the Limehouse Cut into the basin below; the other is used merely as an overflow, and since this photo has been fitted with a weir to raise the water level Image Beyond is the grade 2 listed railway viaduct Image with a pair of DLR units in different liveries.

Commercial Road lock and road bridge
Looking north from beneath the viaduct, built in 1838 to transport the London and Blackwall railway (now the DLR), we see the lock with the double-arched bridge that carries Commercial Road across it. Some of the original wharfhouses appear still to remain on the right.

Commercial Road bridge and the canal
Passing under the bridge was the commencement of the waterborne route for lighters and narrow boats conveying their cargoes of coal, timber or whatever through London and onwards via the canal network. Now the towpath provides a major recreational opportunity for walkers and joggers, among others.

Commercial Road lock, early 1988
Formerly paired locks, the first above the basin. Commercial Road crosses ahead. Foreground gloom is the shadow cast by the old Blackwall railway viaduct, used by the Docklands light Railway, crossing behind.
