The Festival Inn
Situated at the junction of Grundy Street and Kerbery Street, and backing on to Chrisp Street market with its clock tower. The pub is named for the 1951 Festival of Britain which provided the incentive for rebuilding this area of Poplar following wartime damage.

Tropical fruit at Chrisp Street market
Goods available at this traditional East End market reflect the ethnic diversity of the area: the four large, rough-skinned objects at the front are durian from Southeast Asia, a fruit of which the flavour is heaven and the aroma is hell - to the extent that they are banned from being carried on airlines! For a good summary of their extraordinary qualities see http://www.batplants.co.uk/durianfinal.htm

Tropical veg at Chrisp Street market
Although the area has long been ethnically diverse, the old Cockney barrow boys would not have been able to offer this range of tropical greengrocery.
Nearest the camera here are yardlong beans (more like 18 inches in fact) which are popular in China and SE Asia. Behind are various types of gourds and snow peas.

Global cuisine at Chrisp Street market
Pease pudding and faggots, hot dogs and saveloys, curry and halal meat, all make for a wide choice when you want to take the weight off your legs and have a bite while shopping at the market.

Looking east. Balfron Tower near the Blackwall Tunnel can be seen above and behind the market, and the clock tower (decorated with what look like inflatable tentacles) can be seen on the right.
