Elim Pentecostal Church, Fairlop Road, Leytonstone
On the corner of Hainault Road and Fairlop Road in Leytonstone is the Elim Pentecostal Church, Elim meaning "place of refreshing" in Hebrew, according to the white sign outside the church. The church has several venues across the country, with headquarters in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. This view was taken looking northeast from my uncle's living room window. I have given this image a primary geographical category of Church, as there isn't a category that includes Pentecostal churches.

Who knows where Fanny Craddock lived ?
Well, it may come up in a pub quiz sometime. This blue plaque on a house in Fairlop Road, Leytonstone tells all. Fanny Craddock is not the only world-famous celebrity hailing from these parts; there's Alfred Hitchcock and, er, Jonathan Ross.

Site of Apthorp
Fanny Cradock (her name is incorrectly spelt on this plaque) is largely forgotten now, but in the 1960s and '70s she was very much a household name. Her popular television cookery programmes were a forerunner of the myriad of such shows nowadays available, and also featured her hapless husband Johnny. She led a colourful life in other ways, but was born in a house on this site that belonged to her maternal grandparents, named after a villa in Somerset where her grandfather had been born. The site is now occupied by flats.
