The former Anchor Inn - the writing on the wall, 7 Welch Gate
Please see Image and Image for more information about this former inn, one of the many which used to be found in Welch Gate. This photograph shows the list of the former inn's amenities, which has been painted on the wall at first floor level. Unfortunately over the years it obviously was painted more than once, and the letters are not in alignment. This makes it more difficult to read. The contrast has been increased a bit to facilitate readability. My own interpretation of the text is: "Every accommodation for visitors. Moderate rates. Tea Garden". I'm not sure whether there is another short word after "accommodation". Also "rates" is a guess as I can't make that out. It is interesting that the inn had a tea garden, presumably this was the equivalent of what we would call a beer garden today. At present, I have no idea what years the inn was in operation. From its external appearance it probably closed many decades ago.

Welch Gate (lower end)
Welch Gate is a very old and winding road which climbs steeply from Bewdley's town centre to the point where it joins the road known as Winbrook. Welch Gate gets its name from the old tollgate which once stood on the route from Wales. This view is looking towards the town centre. The building on the left has what appears to be a bricked in window, which may have been done possibly in the 18th century when many windows were removed to avoid the "window tax" introduced in 1696 and not removed until early Victorian times.

The former Anchor Inn 7 Welch Gate
Many years ago this road was full of inns and public houses, but almost all are long gone. But it is still possible to see that No. 7 Welch Gate was once an inn, because the words Anchor Inn can be faintly seen between the first and second floor windows. The recently repainted building on the left rather shows up the fact that No. 7 hasn't been painted externally for some time. Unfortunately when it is done, its history will be less self-evident. Today the building is used as residential flats. Image Image

The former Anchor Inn 7 Welch Gate
This photograph gives a close view of the name Anchor Inn which can still be seen painted between the first and second floor windows of this building. In fact the name has been painted twice, at least, and they are not in alignment which makes things slightly confusing. Looking at this photograph there is also some smaller lettering below on the right. Here is a photograph of that:- Image Image

Horn & Trumpet (1), Dog Lane, Bewdley, Worcs
This town centre public house was converted from a private residence in 1840 so the building is older than that. Dog Lane itself first appears in records in 1472 and it is believed that there was a public house somewhere in the lane in medieval times. The building is Grade II listed. Image Image
