The Boot and the Coffee Tavern
Part of old Weymouth's established watering holes in the time when this area was the town's centre and heart. The Boot is reputed to be from the fourteenth century and is still serving. Beyond is the Weymouth Coffee Tavern of 1875: it was built by the exceptionally wealthy Johnstone family and leased to the 'Good Templars' - a temperance movement of the era. They welcomed non-drinkers for many years until the 1930s, when it was taken over by the British Legion. Post-war it changed hands as a Conservative Club, a brewery store and then by Jehovah's Witnesses. Since the Covid pandemic it has now become a resource centre for drug abuse.

The Boot
The Boot Inn is Weymouth's oldest public house, dating from 1386. It was also the lair of smugglers and some spectral visitations, too.

Weymouth's old town hall
The town hall was one of two in the area. Originally the two sides of the River Wey were occupied by two separate towns, Melcombe Regis and Weymouth, which caused many arguments and rivalry - and both had a hall. Queen Elizabeth I decreed that the two should be combined as one under an Act of Parliament in 1591. This is the 'Old Town Hall' and was originally Tudor cottages knocked into one to create a hall. In 1774 it was substantially rebuilt using Portland Stone and carried on as a functioning civic building, along with its counterpart in Melcombe. However, council business tended to be done in Melcombe and so the hall drifted into obscurity. More repairs were needed in 1896. By the twentieth century it was downgraded and used by Girl Guides. Into the twenty-first the Grade II listed hall was left unoccupied and fell into disrepair. With a charity-based group given the chance to keep it in order and run it as a community centre and arts venue. See Image] for a look at the tower and clock.

Weymouth's old hall
Wedged along High West Street is the old Weymouth Town Hall. Originally a Tudor rival to Melcombe Regis's hall it was slowly overtaken by the latter. With the chance to make major repairs and alterations in 1896, the hall was rebuilt with a clock on the tower, a present from Sir Henry Edwards. See Image] for a side aspect.

Modern interpretation
This colourful assortment of properties is in fact a very recent development of retirement homes. The styles and various features (including a long balcony) is the Harbour Lights Court and has the inscription of MMXV above it.
