Water turbine pump, Sutton Poyntz
Known variously as a Whitelaw or Scotch turbine this is the simplest form of reaction turbine and is essentially the same as Hero's steam aeolipile. This is of considerable vintage and is a unique survivor.

Turbine pump, Sutton Poyntz
This operational site is also used by Wessex Water as the company museum and is open by appointment only. The best exhibit is this original pump of 1857 by D Cook of Glasgow. A Whitelaw turbine (a reaction device very like Hero's aeolipile) drives a pair of reciprocating pumps via bevel gearing. This is a unique survivor and should be seen by every student of historic pumping machinery.

Part of a funnel from the SS Great Eastern
Brunel's SS Great Eastern (also known as Leviathan) suffered a disastrous explosion in a funnel casing while on trial. She put in to Weymouth for repairs and part of the funnel became a filter in a reservoir at Sutton Poyntz. This is it following withdrawal from service. It is now down in Bristol with Brunel's SS Great Britain. An amazing and relatively little known survivor (while at Sutton Poyntz).
