West Lodge
The, Grade II Listed ( http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-105264-west-lodge-littlebredy ), former toll cottage was built in the middle of the 19th century by Benjamin Ferrey ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Ferrey ). The toll road probably ran as a 'spur road' from the main turnpikes at Portesham to Winterbourne Steepleton.

Through the old gate
The road enters Littlebredy between the posts of a former tollgate, there is an Ordnance Survey benchmark on the right-hand post (see Image). According to the Journals of the House of Commons (Vol 36, 1803. http://tinyurl.com/7yeoe2q ) this toll-road would have been a 'spur' running from Winterbourne Steepleton to join the main turnpikes at Portesham.
