Hanford School
The school is an independent girls school. It is a hothouse for larger and more famous schools such as Bryanston and Hanford prides itself on the number of girls each year that get scholarships to top schools in a range of subjects. The building is a major Jacobean house (Pevsner) built in 1623 for Sir Robert Seymer. It has one tremendous fireplace which Pevsner describes as being of great vulgarity and ugliness, but the building itself which is mostly original is beautiful stone work.

Wessex Ridgeway in Terrace Coppice
For northbound walkers on the trail, this is the beginning of the climb up Hambledon Hill. The surface of this track is quite dreadful. Side to side it is a muddy morass, and impossible to make progress upon, without clinging to the wire fence. It becomes steeper in gradient further on, and more difficult to negotiate.

Hanford: bridleway down from Hanford Hill
Thanks to recent dry weather, it is not as muddy underfoot as it looks - the mud here, while plentiful, has hardened somewhat and is only slightly springy except in the deepest spots.
