Feeding the birds at the Mere, Askern
Plenty of gulls, swans and geese, but very few ducks.
The Mere was the centre piece of Askern in its days as a spa. Even today boats can be hired in season.
Nowadays the water tower (on the left of the picture) is the dominating feature of the town.

Askern Boathouse
The Mere was once the focus of Askern's existence as a spa. Nowadays the Boathouse stills hire out boats (in season) and provides refreshments. On the day I visited its main activity seemed to be selling bags of food to feed the ducks, geese, swans and gulls on the mere.

Askern Spa Pool
In the 19th century, Askern began to be developed as a spa – this lake was one of its attractions – then in the early 20th century coal was discovered beneath the village and its history took a very different turn.

It occurs to me that this rather bland building needs is some architectural feature which echoes the strong shadow cast by the tree on the opposite side of the road.
