The Centre of the Earth
The Earth Centre was a Millennium Commission Lottery Project which failed not long after opening. It was designed to show us how to lead a sustainable lifestyle in a fun and interactive way. One of the incentives to visit was if anyone arrived by public transport they would be allowed free admission. Initiatives like this are all well and good but run the risk of sending a message to anyone arriving by car that they are not welcome. And then it closed. The land is now for sale.

Conisbrough railway station, Yorkshire, 2000
Opened in 1884 by the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire railway on what is now the line from Sheffield to Doncaster. This station replaced an earlier one slightly further east.

Legacy of Failure

Derelict building beside the River Don
The building may have been associated with the ill-fated 'Earth Centre' which opened in 1999 opened with £41.6m of Millennium Commission funding and closed after just 40 months following an almost complete lack of interest.
