Middleham buildings [6]
In Market Place, Foxtor House, on the left, and The Red Armoury, an equestrian store, were built in the early 19th century. The Red Armoury building was formerly the Castle Hotel and earlier Mercury House. Constructed of rendered rubble stone with ashlar dressings under a tile roof. The shop window is 20th century. Middleham is a market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. It lies on the south bank of the River Ure in Wensleydale, some 2 miles southeast of Leyburn. There has been a settlement here since Roman times. Today, Middleham is a centre of horse racing. The massive, ruinous Middleham Castle, one of the childhood homes of Richard III, dominates the town.

Limestone and sandstone
A row of 18th century houses in Middleham illustrating the two most common local building materials. The left hand trio are of limestone, whilst the three on the right are of sandstone construction. Some of the ground floor windows would suggest previous use as shops. A nice old grey Ferguson tractor is parked on the cobbles.
