In Market Place, Foxtor House, on the left, and The Red Armoury, an equestrian store, were built in the early 19th century. The Red Armoury building was formerly the Castle Hotel and earlier Mercury House. Constructed of rendered rubble stone with ashlar dressings under a tile roof. The shop window is 20th century. Listed, for group value, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1179168 Middleham is a market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. It lies on the south bank of the River Ure in Wensleydale, some 2 miles southeast of Leyburn. There has been a settlement here since Roman times. Today, Middleham is a centre of horse racing. The massive, ruinous Middleham Castle, one of the childhood homes of Richard III, dominates the town.
