Stanhope Station, Weardale Railway
The Wear Valley line was extended to Stanhope in 1862 by the Frosterley & Stanhope Railway. Unable to extend the line to Wearhead from the existing station a new one was built south west of the original site at a cost of £2,700.00 and the line was opened in October 1895. The wooden footbridge was replaced by the Grade II Listed standard North Eastern railway type in 1920. Passenger services ended in June 1953 although some specials ran between May 1988 and September 1992. Stanhope station gradually deteriorated and lost its canopy but had a £9,000.00 improvement including a refurbished platform when the specials started in 1988. Freight continued to March 1993 to serve Lafarge cement works. Wear Valley District Council bought the station building from British Rail in 1992. Passenger services began again between here and Wolsingham in July 2004 under the now dissolved Weardale Railways Ltd.

Stanhope Station, Driver's View
Nostalgia! The front or back seats on these old railcars where you could see along the track as you were going along. They don't make 'em like that any more. Stanhope Station on the Weardale Railway.
