Darlington Bank Top locomotive shed
The yard at the north end of the shed with a variety of locomotives. The shiny paintwork of 8F 2-8-0 48720 indicates that it has recently passed through the railway workshops and is being run-in before being released to its home shed.
The area is now occupied partly by Teesside University.

42405 at Darlington ? 1964
A bit off the beaten track for a former London Midland and Scottish Railway locomotive, although Darlington was its final depot allocation.
This was the second version of the LMS 2-6-4 tank engine, still with the Fowler-design parallel boiler, but with an improved cab.

B1 locomotives at Darlington ? 1964
A wet visit to the locomotive shed.
The B1 class was Thompson's 1942 design of 4-6-0 locomotive for the London and North Eastern Railway for general purpose passenger and freight work. Over 400 were built and it was a very successful type.
In the background is the former Corporation power station, which would be closed and demolished within a few years.

Ready and waiting
Former LNER class A1 4-6-2 60124 'Kenilworth' is on standby at Darlington Bank Top shed in the event of failure of a locomotive on an express train. It has 'express' headlamps in place, but more in hope than expectation.
By this time expresses were virtually all diesel hauled and the sight of a steam loco on an express would have been a rarity. Darlington would not have provided motive power for expresses on a normal basis, and still had a 100% allocation of steam locomotives, as can be seen in the background.
The area of the shed is now largely occupied by Teesside University.

Freight Locomotive, Darlington
Freightliner locomotive 66419 is at the front of its intermodal train in sidings north of Darlington Bank Top station. The locomotive has run round the train having brought it in from Tees Dock, the line from Teesside joining in a north facing direction while the train will run south to Felixstowe. A direct route via Yarm without the need to run round cannot yet be used for full size containers as additional clearance work is needed.
