Derwentside Funeral Service, Medomsley Road
On a dull and dismal December day in Consett, this seemed an appropriate shot. The building was erected in 1939 and was a fish and chip shop. Later it became a plumbers' merchant and then in 1975 a frozen food shop. It has been a funeral service since 1986.

Sunrise through thawing icicles
The thaw did not last for long as 4 inches of snow fell on the town of Consett and surrounding areas later in the day.

Thawing icicle
A weak sun starts to thaw the icicles hanging from the guttering. There are a few inches of lying snow in the area and another 4 inches fell during the afternoon with the usual traffic chaos to follow.

Sunrise, Consett as we draw towards the winter solstice
The bungalows along East View, covered with a blanket of snow today, face East over the playing fields of Belle Vue Park. Winter will soon be here in the Northern Hemisphere! During the winter solstice the sun sits closer to the horizon than at any other time during the year, giving us the least amount of daylight. The day after the winter solstice marks the beginning of lengthening days leading up to the summer solstice. The word "Solstice" derives from the Latin and means "Sun stands still." Hard-packed snow, East View, Consett
One of those side roads which are never gritted making walking and driving very hazardous. The tall building in the distance is the Civic Centre.

Waxwings in Consett
Part of a flock of these colourful birds on Medomsley Road in Consett on Sunday 12th November. There have been a lot of sightings of these winter visitors from Scandinavia and Russia in recent weeks, mainly in Scotland and eastern England. It looks like this could be an irruption year when large numbers come over the North Sea. The last big one was in 2012/13.
