Field adjacent to Derwent Walk
The Derwent Walk and cycleway follows the route of an old railway from Swalwell in Gateshead to Consett in County Durham. The view is from a pub car park adjacent to the Walk, over fields, towards the village of Ebchester.

Site of former Ebchester station
View NE, towards Newcastle: ex-NER Newcastle - Scotswood - Blackhill line. The station was closed 21/9/53; the line 1/12/54 to passengers, 11/11/63 to goods. Evidently the track-bed is now a cycle-path.

Ebchester village and the Derwent valley
Seen from the site of the old Ebchester station. The road in the foreground, also seen on the far hillside is the B6309 from Leadgate which follows the line of Dere Street, an old Roman road which passed the Roman fort of Vindomora at Ebchester before continuing onwards towards Corbridge.

Former station building at Ebchester
This was built in the 1860's as one of the stations on the Derwent Valley Line to Consett. Like several others on this line, it was a bit remote from the village, and this was one of the reasons for its decline. Passenger traffic ceased in 1954, and the line closed in 1963.

Picnic site at the former Ebchester Station
Constructed in 1867 and running from Swalwell on the River Tyne up to Consett, the Derwent Valley railway finally closed in 1963. The footway on the line of the old railway has been converted into a cycleway and forms part of National Cycle Network route 14. The former Ebchester Station operated from 1867 to 1953 and has now been converted into a picnic site. The interpretation board describes the role of Ebchester as a Roman fort (Vindomora) sited where Dere Street crossed the River Derwent.

Derwent Walk at Ebchester
Constructed in 1867 and running from Swalwell on the River Tyne up to Consett, the Derwent Valley railway finally closed in 1963. The former Ebchester Station lies just beyond the bridge and operated from 1867 to 1953. The footway on the line of the old railway has been converted into a cycleway and forms part of National Cycle Network route 14. The bridge carries the B6309 road from Leadgate which follows the line of Dere Street, a Roman road making for the old Roman fort at Ebchester (Vindomora). The building above the bridge is the Derwent Walk Inn.
