The station had been recently rebuilt, for the electrification between Crewe and Liverpool that was about to commence on 1/1/62. The Up Class F empties is rushing through with Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48490, as I and others wait shivering on the Down platform.

Hartford Station, in mid-winter
View northward towards Warrington and the North; London & North Western West Coast Main Line, Crewe - Carlisle. The 06.15 Carlisle - Crewe semi-fast is stopping to pick up me (and my wife, and others) on a bitterly cold day in December 1962. The wires are for the electric trains that started to run between Liverpool and Crewe on 1/1/62.
