WWII Cheshire: Ladder Stile pillbox, Macclesfield Canal (2)
Update Oct 2020: I've been reliably informed that this pillbox has since received a skim of cement and a coat of bright cream paint. Pillbox (type FW3/24): DoB ID: S0000225 Image

WWII Cheshire: Ladder Stile pillbox, Macclesfield Canal (1)
- Pillbox (type FW3/24): DoB ID: S0000225 Another type 24 pillbox that is unusual in that it's positioned in a field close to the main road, and some distance away from the canal facing west away from it. It would normally be expected to face eastward, but not unusual, as canal defences were often required to defend in opposite directions to others, in order to maximise the covering fire to other positions. Above Lock No 5, Macclesfield Canal
The countryside around here is far from flat, as can be seen from the local 'mountain' (known as The Cloud) in the background. This land feature is shared between Cheshire and Staffordshire, as the County boundary passes through its summit. In the middle distance of this view is the curiously-named Peckerpool Wood Bridge, which carries the A54.

Bridge over the Macclesfield Canal, Wheatsheaf, A54
Bridge No.55 on the canal, built 1831, Listed Grade II. Remarkably the bridge was built wide enough that it has not had to be widened to carry modern traffic.

Peckerspool Wood Bridge north-west of Bosley, Cheshire
Bridge No 55 across the Macclesfield Canal carries the A54 Buxton Road. Beyond it are the tail gates of Bosley Lock No 5. On the Macclesfield Canal there are twelve locks in the flight at Bosley, allowing a rise in water level of 118 feet (36 metres). Navigating northwards, this lock is the eighth one up. The Macclesfield Canal is just over 27 miles in length, and has thirteen locks, including the stop lock at Hall Green and the other twelve at Bosley. The canal was surveyed by Thomas Telford in 1825, then engineered by William Crosley, and opened on 9 November 1831 at a cost of £320,000. It joins the Trent and Mersey Canal at Hall Green to the Peak Forest Canal at Marple.
