Sandbach signalbox (now demolished)
The signalbox dated from the 1960's electrification of the Manchester-Crewe line. The photo was taken in 2004, before the completion of the Manchester South resignalling project replaced it. It had been demolished by 2008 (see separate photo Image).

Ballast train regaining the main line at Sandbach
Freight trains usually use the slow lines between Crewe and Sandbach, beyond which the route to Manchester is double rather than quadruple tracked. This ballast train headed by Freightliner loco number 66613 had been held in platform 3 at Sandbach for a passenger train to pass, but was now about to rejoin the down main line.
