Freight trains usually use the slow lines between Crewe and Sandbach, beyond which the route to Manchester is double rather than quadruple tracked. This ballast train headed by Freightliner loco number 66613 had been held in platform 3 at Sandbach for a passenger train to pass, but was now about to rejoin the down main line.
