Shrewley is a typical strip development village with houses along the main road with long narrow strip gardens but very little residential housing behind that.

Village hall and car park (locked: grrrr!), phone box, seat, litter bin and, oh, a public footpath, at the heart of the village. The road is part of the busy route between Five Ways and Claverdon.

Shrewley Tunnel is part of the original fabric of the Warwick and Birmingham Canal that was completed in 1799. This is the south-eastern portal which is a Grade II Listed Structure. The English Heritage website describes it thus:- "Tunnel portal. Late C18 with later alterations. Probably designed by Wm Felkin and Philip Henry Witton for Warwick and Birmingham Canal Co. Brick and stone. Single semi-circular arch with brick band and outer stone band with keystone and stone imposts. Above, a stone band followed by a parapet with a line of Staffordshire blue bricks crowned by a solid iron kerb. To left, a trailing edge wing wall of alternating bands of brick and stone, consolidating embankment taking towpath upwards to form horse-path which crosses fields to join towpath tunnel attached to Shrewley Tunnel north portal."

This is the south-east portal. The tunnel is 433 yards (396 metres) in length, and was opened in 1799 when the Warwick and Birmingham Canal was completed. Two seven foot beam boats can pass each other in the tunnel. There is no towpath, so the horses were taken through the hill in their own tunnel a bit higher up. Image]

The 433-yard tunnel was built for the Warwick and Birmingham Canal. It was completed in 1799. The brick lining is now covered with calciferous deposits that have formed into small stalactites.
