South-east portal of Shrewley Tunnel, Warwickshire

The tunnel is 433 yards (396 metres) in length, and was opened in 1799 when the Warwick and Birmingham Canal was completed. Two seven foot beam boats can pass through the tunnel. The horses used to be led up the track to the left and through their own tunnel, to be re-attached to the boats on the other side. (See David's picture from the other end Image])
