Whitley Bridge
Sometimes known as Whitley Abbey Bridge (though there was never a monastery here), this bridge once carried the Coventry to London road over the River Sherbourne. It has long since been bypassed and is now blocked to motor traffic. It is Grade II listed and is dated to the 16th century by the listing at the Historic England site https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1076652?section=official-list-entry .

Native black poplar near the River Sherbourne, Whitley, Coventry
The tree is native in N and W Europe as Populus nigra var. betulifolia. Here, the characteristic heavy, low arching branches are not present. Enlargement of the photo seems to show massive scars to the trunk where these branches might have been removed. Young branches seem to be obligingly taking their place. Note also the characteristic vertical shoots arising from some branches (more prominent on the other side of the tree). Bizarre: once seen, never forgotten.
