Light at the end of the tunnel, Newbold.
A view of, and through, the "new" canal tunnel taking the Oxford Canal under the hill at Newbold. This is the section of the canal build to bypass the previous contour route.

Bus stop on Main Street, Newbold on Avon
This bus stop is served by buses running on the route from Coventry via Brinklow and is the first one encountered as they enter the Rugby urban area. Interestingly the flag, although battered, still displays the Midland Red name (in two different styles) more than twenty years after Stagecoach dropped the brand. In fact, the legal name for Stagecoach operations in Warwickshire remains Midland Red (South) Ltd. However, this route has for many years been a Warwickshire County Council tendered service currently operated by National Express on weekdays and Stagecoach on Sundays. Bay Tree House is in the background.

The Boat and The Barley Mow
These public houses would have been beside the Oxford Canal when built, hence the slightly curving building line. When the new bypass route was built the length of canal past their frontages was filled in and became a lane, however the pubs survived. The modern day line of the canal can just be seen at the end of the lane, still within a reasonable staggering distance of both establishments!

The Boat and the Barley Mow
Two pubs side by side which were on the old course of the Oxford canal.Since the tunnel was built they are at right angles to the canal but still profit from passing trade especially through the summer. Two of three pubs in Newbold-on-Avon.

Newbold Tunnel
The canal is frozen after a very cold night and from this point there is a view straight through the 250 yard Newbold Tunnel.

South portal of Newbold Tunnel
Grade II listed. Listing number 1249971. Tunnel portal. 1831-34 with slight C20 alterations. Brick and stone. Single, semi-circular arch with upward curving band and solid parapet. Spandrels curve outwards and run into wing walls which have trailing edges. All of brick except copings which are stone. Double towpaths throughout tunnel with cast-iron hand-rails with trailing edges for tow-ropes. A rare example of a canal tunnel with these features, constructed during 1830's improvements to the Oxford Canal carried out with William Cubitt as consultant engineer.

Newbold on Avon Churchyard
Most of the burial ground is to the rear of St Botolph's Church; the area here is mainly lawn with flower beds and a path leading out to Main Street. Daffodils and snowdrops combine to add a splash of brightness and colour in this late February view. The lamp is a curious design.
