Croffle Bank on Coventry High Street
Next to the Subway branch stands a Croffle Bank. 'Croffle' is a portmanteau word, combining elements of 'croissant' and 'waffle', and describes a dessert made from croissant pastry prepared in a waffle iron. It is popular in South Korea; the business also advertises Korean fried chicken and bingsu, a Korean iced dessert. It is one of the many businesses in central Coventry catering to students from East Asia studying at Coventry University.
Much of Coventry High Street survived the destruction of the second world war and the demolition enthusiasm of the city council. The Croffle Bank occupies no. 13, a very narrow, single-bay building with a 19th century facade featuring stucco incised to resemble stonework. In the 1980s this property was occupied by the Wedge, a cafe serving baked potatoes and fillings with a radical bookshop on the first floor. This closed around 1993 and was superseded by a Max Spielmann photo shop and various restaurant businesses.

The Golden Cross, c. 1981
The Golden Cross, seen from Bayley Lane, before the redevelopment of the old Baptist church site on the left. The replacement building, dating from 1991, hides the buildings on Hay Lane and most of the Cross. The Baptist church was destroyed during WWII and its basement remains were filled with water and used as a static water tank for the rest of the war. The site was then left undeveloped for several decades. Beyond the Cross the end wall of Martins Bank can be seen, it was later demolished during the development of Cathedral Lanes.
