Possibly to do with bus routes. This is the approach to the busy Trinity Street / The Burges bus interchange. Ahead is the Coventry Transport Museum.

The six metre animated puppet of Lady Godiva, transported by her 25-tricycle cyclopedia, taking part in the 2012 Godiva Carnival procession before taking part in various other events on the way down to Waltham Forest during the following week.

A vintage 'Royal Blue' coach in National Travel livery stands in Hales Street, ready to take on passengers for the free shuttle from the Coventry Transport Museum to the Festival of Motoring at Stoneleigh Park. Beyond it is Corporation Street and Hillman House tower block. Royal Blue coaches served the South and West and the name disappeared when a National Express re-branding in the 1980s dropped the predecessor firm names. A similar one in action in 1978: Image

Near Coventry Transport Museum

A vintage coach pulls away from the transport museum with passengers on the free shuttle to Stoneleigh Park for the Coventry Festival of Motoring event. This vehicle was part of the Western National Omnibus Company fleet from 1966 to 1978. The Hales Street frontage of the museum stands on the area formerly occupied by Matterson's ironmongery store.

Only the Old Grammar School (centre) and the building to its right remain to identify this scene as Hales Street. On the left were the 1930s buildings at the bottom of Trinity Street and, beyond them the Smithfield Hotel. On the right were the Mattersons general household goods store and the Apollo Theatre (originally the Hippodrome, later Coventry Theatre) demolished in 2002 ( Image] ). Originally the chapel of the Hospital of St John, which was used as a school from 1558 until 1885. The Hospital of St John was founded in 1155 by Laurence, Prior of Coventry.

The main hall of the recently restored old grammar school ( Image] ). The black wooden stalls, believed to date from the 15th century, were former choir stalls in Whitefriars monastery, where the school endowed by John Hales was first located and came here with the move of the school. They display several examples of 17th and 18th century schoolboy carved graffiti. The medieval sandstone building was formerly the chapel of the Hospital of St John, founded in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 14th century. The hospital was dissolved in 1545 (Dissolution of the Monasteries) and purchased by John Hales who undertook to provide a school which remained here until moving to a new building in Warwick Road in 1885.
