Portal House School, Sea Street
Portal House school is a Victorian building which was built in 1840. It was known as Marine House and it was owned by Mr James Temple. It was run as a ladies[‘] boarding school and by 1851 the 20 pupils had increased to 38 - one from as far away as India! Later on in 1891 the building was purchased by the Portal Benevolent Institution to be used as a convalescent home for working men, called Morley House after the founder of the institution. From 1914 to 1918 it was occupied by the military and then in 1947 it was sold to the KCC to be used as a home for the elderly until 1977 http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-636000-144000/page/8 A public notice, published in the East Kent Mercury of 15 January 2015, gave the information that there was a proposal to demolish the school and rebuild it, on its existing site, with an additional 20 places http://consultations.kent.gov.uk/consult.ti/PortalHouse/consultationHome

Work seems to have been completed on the teaching block and the original Portal House building, since my last visit showing the Image but the hoarding, across the entrance, suggests that there is still some construction work being carried out on the site.
