The 'Alhambra' public house, Wellesley Road, West Croydon
Almost certainly the very last photograph ever taken of the Alhambra, as it was under demolition at the time. It is difficult to orient this picture with the present-day scene, as there has been so much change in this area. The tramline now comes round from West Croydon where the bus is seen standing in the photo, but in the opposite direction. The site of the Alhambra is now occupied by a modern office block.

Saffron Square Tower, East Croydon
Residential tower block built to the designs of architects Rolfe Judd. View from East Croydon Station. This http://www.bdonline.co.uk/carbuncle-cup-saffron-square-croydon-by-rolfe-judd/5082270.article suggests that the colourful exterior is not to everybody's taste.

Croydon: St Michael and All Angels church, from the north
St Michael and All Angels church is a late 19th century structure tucked into Croydon's main shopping area. Although Church of England, it is (and always has been) very Anglo-Catholic in its leanings and could easily be mistaken for a Roman Catholic church inside. The architect, J. Loughborough Pearson, built the similarly Anglo-Catholic St John the Evangelist in Upper Norwood (Image). For the south side of the church, see Image; for the east end, Image

Some of these shops have already given up the ghost and are unlikely ever to find new occupants, while others are clearly on short leases.

Police Incident at West Croydon
Late afternoon of 16th November saw West Croydon bus and rail stations closed and some local premises evacuated; hundreds of people had to continue their journey on foot. Police, fire and ambulance services were all in attendance. A suspicious vehicle had been identified and police eventually carried out a controlled explosion.

Delta Point, Wellesley Road
A huge complex built c1985 and previously occupied by British Telecom. Having lain empty for at least ten years, it has recently been converted into 400 flats. A remarkable number of Croydon's office blocks are either being converted, or have been converted into flats in recent years. Under permitted development rights, such conversions do not require planning permission. What's the betting there'll be a serious shortage of office space in a few years?
