Croydon: The 'Glamorgan'
In 1832, a large public house, the 'Horse and Groom', opened on this site. In 1993, in an attempt to go upmarket, it renamed itself the 'Grouse and Claret', (though I doubt whether grouse was ever on the menu). Its latest transmogrification is to the 'Glamorgan', as a high-class gourmet eating house. Watch this space.

Croydon: The 'Orchard'
First opened in 1855 as a beer-house. Until about 1980, the name was the 'Cherry Orchard'. It is a good example of a pub which is making a real creditable effort to stay alive in an area where other pubs have 'gone under': a wide variety of entertainment and activities are offered, and it does give the impression that the landlord really cares.
