Gestingthorpe village sign
See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3506269 for detail. The sign shows St Mary's church, various scenes of bucolic activity and a staggering figure in the top right hand corner. This is to represent Captain Lawrence Oates (who lived at Over Hall just outside the village) and died during Scott's 1912 expedition to the South Pole. There is a monument to him in the church.

Gestingthorpe, Essex
Note the town sign top right, this is Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Oates an English Antarctic explorer on 16th March 1912 he walked from the tent into a blizzard, with the words, "I am just going outside and may be some time". His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware his ill health was compromising his three companion's chances of survival, he chose certain death. In 1913 his brother officers erected a lovely huge memorial to him in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Gestingthorpe. The church is opposite his family home of Gestingthorpe Hall.
