See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3506269 for detail. The sign shows St Mary's church, various scenes of bucolic activity and a staggering figure in the top right hand corner. This is to represent Captain Lawrence Oates (who lived at Over Hall just outside the village) and died during Scott's 1912 expedition to the South Pole. There is a monument to him in the church.
