Note the town sign top right, this is Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Oates an English Antarctic explorer on 16th March 1912 he walked from the tent into a blizzard, with the words, "I am just going outside and may be some time". His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware his ill health was compromising his three companion's chances of survival, he chose certain death. In 1913 his brother officers erected a lovely huge memorial to him in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Gestingthorpe. The church is opposite his family home of Gestingthorpe Hall.
