Formerly The Star, Great Dunmow
Now branded 'Fulton's Chop House', with no respect for the past of the building, which is grade II listed. Fortunately the name lives on in Star Lane to its left and in the name of the shop to the left (also grade II listed). The shop has a star over the door, 'Star Corner' over the window on the left, and calls itself 'Starr-Lite Party and Dance Shop'.

Doctor's Pond seen from North Street
Legend has it that the name "Doctor's Pond" is derived from a local doctor's use of the pond for breeding and keeping leeches which were used in the medicine of the day. Lionel Lukin, who was born in Great Dunmow on 18th May 1742 and died at Hythe in Kent on 16th February 1834, was famous for inventing the first unimmergible lifeboat in 1784. Tradition has it that Lukin's first experiments with model boats were carried out on Doctor's Pond. For more information about Lukin and his lifeboat see https://www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-17170 and https://todayinsci.com/L/Lukin_Lionel/LukinLionel-HistoryLifeBoat.htm

On the hottest day of the year so far - and a Sunday too - we expected more people to be sitting by the pond.

Footpath alongside Doctor's Pond
Some sizeable looking trout were jumping for flies when I passed, but sadly I wasn't fast enough to capture them. The local anglers weren't having much luck either...
