Legend has it that the name "Doctor's Pond" is derived from a local doctor's use of the pond for breeding and keeping leeches which were used in the medicine of the day. Lionel Lukin, who was born in Great Dunmow on 18th May 1742 and died at Hythe in Kent on 16th February 1834, was famous for inventing the first unimmergible lifeboat in 1784. Tradition has it that Lukin's first experiments with model boats were carried out on Doctor's Pond.
