Shenfield station
Shenfield station was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway company on 29th March 1843 on the extension from Brentwood to Colchester. It closed in March 1850 as passenger numbers were so low because there was little housing in the area. It was reopened with the name Shenfield & Hutton Junction on 1st January 1887 by the Great Eastern Railway to serve as an interchange station with the new line to Southend that was completed two years later. It was renamed Shenfield on 20th February 1969.
In this view a terminating TfL Rail train waits on Platform 2 before heading back to Liverpool Street. From 2019 Shenfield will be the eastern end of Crossrail when it will be opened as the Elizabeth Line.

Shenfield Station
Shenfield is no more than a suburb of Brentwood but has long been the outer terminus for suburban trains from Liverpool Street. Electrification had been planned in the 1930s but the Second World War delayed implementation until 1949; it came to be seen as one of the most important infrastructure schemes of the immediate post-war period - the showpiece of a new Britain. In more recent times the station has become the eastern end of the Elizabeth Line with, by the time of this photograph, trains running through to Paddington - which is why the canopy incorporates the Transport for London roundel.
