Balderton Brook
Viewed from the modern footbridge, near the old sandstone bridge, the banks of Balderton Brook have just had a trim. Although it doesn't look very impressive here, the brook is a very important part of the drainage system of what were once the Saltney marshes, and it is maintained accordingly.

Balderton Brook and Drainage Ditch.
Balderton Brook flows from left to right, across the photo, heading for the River Dee. The other ditch is one of the main drainage ditches alongside the A5104 Chester to Broughton road. The sluice gate is all part of the flood management system to stop water flowing back along the ditch. The houses are part of the Brook Farm Estate.

Balderton Brook and Old Sandstone Bridge
This angle give a better view, not only of the very old sandstone blocks lining the top part of the bridge, but also the tie rods and cement rendering, which is much more recent in date, on the lower part.

Stone Bridge Saltney, and a bench mark
The historic Stone Bridge in Saltney carries the A5104 over Balderton Brook. The bridge almost certainly dates to the time of the 18th century turnpike, built after the draining of Saltney marshes. There is a bench mark on the flat stone on the right of the photo - seeImage The Ford dealers, Evans Halshaw, have now relocated to the other side of Chester.

Brutus' statue inside Morrisons supermarket
Brutus, the Saltney Morrisons cat, became famous for spending all his days inside the entrance to the supermarket, despite having a comfortable home across the busy main road. When he passed away early in 2017 contributions were forthcoming to provide a statue which has been installed close to his daily resting/snoozing place.
