New Brighton train at Conway Park station
Merseyrail electric unit 507 029 pauses at Conway Park, working a Wirral Line service from Liverpool to New Brighton. Conway Park station was constructed by excavating downwards to open out a short section of the tunnel under central Birkenhead, and was opened in 1998. The 507s were built in the late 1970s for the Northern Line of Merseyrail, but in practice have long been used interchangeably with the virtually identical 508s that are ostensibly for the Wirral Line. They are now among the oldest passenger rolling stock on the national network, and are expected to be replaced in the next few years.

Conway Park Railway Station
Conway Park is the newest railway station on the Wirral Line which was built to provide better access to Birkenhead for rail passengers, who would otherwise just continue onto Liverpool. There are services every 15 minutes to both West Kirby and New Brighton, and services approximately every 7 minutes to Liverpool. Visible on the left-hand side of the picture is the back of Vue Cinema, another development which was built to encourage people to come to Birkenhead over the previous nearest cinemas in Liverpool and Bromborough.

Conway Park station, Birkenhead
Looking towards Liverpool from platform 2. Conway Park station was constructed by excavating downwards to open out a short section of the tunnel under central Birkenhead, and was opened in 1998. The station was left unroofed (though the cutting sides are supported by substantial concrete beams, a modern equivalent of flying arches), but being so far below ground level, natural light seems insufficient to keep the station illuminated.
