Ventilating station, Sidney Street
This is one of three enormous and imposing ventilation buildings for the Birkenhead-to-Liverpool road tunnel (Queensway). There is a strong Art Deco theme in all the tunnel constructions. An amazing picture of these stations and fascinating information can be found at http://www.tunnelusers.org.uk/history.htm Usage of the tunnel started on 17th December 1933, and it was officially opened by King George V on 18th July 1934.

Doorway, Mersey Tunnel
At the Sidney Street ventilation plant. A fine example of art deco which is being carefully preserved. These doors had been very recently repainted, in the original colours, to highlight the decorative detail; the modern trend would now be to paint everything one colour to get the cheapest result.
