Hamilton Square Railway Station, Birkenhead
The main railway station in Birkenhead - part of the Birkenhead-Liverpool underground loop line 'Merseyrail'. The Mersey rail tunnel was built in 1886. Later on, passenger numbers declined due to the pollution from the steam engines. In 1903, this was the first railway in Britain to convert from steam to electric, ensuring its success. In recent years, it acquired fame due to a family of peregrine falcons nesting on a parapet.

Doorway, Mersey Tunnel
At the Sidney Street ventilation plant. A fine example of art deco which is being carefully preserved. These doors had been very recently repainted, in the original colours, to highlight the decorative detail; the modern trend would now be to paint everything one colour to get the cheapest result.
