The George and Dragon, Liverpool Road, Chester
The George and Dragon is an old coaching inn built in the Tudor style. The site of the George & Dragon is outside the Porta Decumana, or North Gate and during the Roman occupation was utilised as a burial ground. The Romans, not wishing to waste space within the fortress, always laid their dead to rest outside the defensive walls and this part of the road into Chester would once have been lined with elaborate memorials to departed citizens and soldiers.
The ghost of a Roman soldier is said to pass backwards and forwards through the walls of the George & Dragon.

The 'Dragon' at the George and Dragon
I think this dragon on a balcony is a fairly recent addition to the pub.

The George and Dragon
This large public house/hotel was built 1929-31, for the Birkenhead Brewery Company on prominent site between Liverpool Road and Parkgate Road, facing north end of Upper Northgate Street. It was designed in the style of an Elizabethan manor-house, with sandstone-dressed brown brick, timber frame with plaster panels and a red tile roof. A notable feature is its large red dragon standing on the balcony (

The George and Dragon, together with its sign, is listed at grade II as “an excellent example of a Road House of the late 1920s/early 1930s, well-composed, consistently detailed and intact” (List entry Number: 1375869 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1375869 Historic England).
