This large public house/hotel was built 1929-31, for the Birkenhead Brewery Company on prominent site between Liverpool Road and Parkgate Road, facing north end of Upper Northgate Street. It was designed in the style of an Elizabethan manor-house, with sandstone-dressed brown brick, timber frame with plaster panels and a red tile roof. A notable feature is its large red dragon standing on the balcony (Image]). The George and Dragon, together with its sign, is listed at grade II as “an excellent example of a Road House of the late 1920s/early 1930s, well-composed, consistently detailed and intact” (List entry Number: 1375869 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1375869 Historic England).
