Welcome to Six Mile Bottom
The odd name is derived from its being in a hollow 6 miles from the start of Newmarket Racecourse. The board suggests that passing trade on the way to the races is at least part of the reason why such a small hamlet still has a pub.

Six Mile Bottom station house
Until 1967 Six Mile Bottom was the second stop out of Cambridge on the line to Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. The two-storey section with porch was originally the station master's house. The whole building is now a private house.

A1304 approaching Six Mile Bottom level crossing
The closed passenger station and the general goods station were east of the road (to the right). There was a cattle dock and sidings on the west of the road behind the white house. I cannot find out if this was ever a railway house.
