10-22 West Walls
Numbers 10-22 West Walls are Grade I listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1297278 and described as "Early C12 city wall, 1813 school, late C19 mews and 1980s public house, etc. These later buildings in themselves are not of interest but are listed to protect the city wall behind them. The front wall of each building on the West Walls facade being built on top of and against the walls. That the city wall exists behind these buildings has been confirmed."
The Green Room Theatre Club was founded in 1952 and now occupy the West Walls Theatre. In 1896 the premises had opened as a coach house and stables for Mr R Crosbie. At one point the building was part of the Greenall Whitley's Central Plaza Hotel complex, the site of which can be seen in the background. West Walls, range of buildings including West Walls Theatre
This rather unprepossessing group of buildings is most surprisingly Listed Grade I, but simply on the basis that this protects some sections of the medieval city walls which are incorporated in the buildings.

Sparrowhawk eating a pigeon
Spotted in a rarely frequented lane close to the city centre - for location see

I was able to observe this bird for several minutes, from just a few metres away. Eventually it took off, carrying the carcass with it.

Buildings on SW side of West Walls including Green Room Club/Theatre
Ordnance Survey records indicate that a benchmark levelled at 25.131m above Newlyn Datum was verified in 1972 at the junction on Nos. 16 and 18, but noted as destroyed, possibly because of application of pebbledash to the buildings

Backhouse Walk, looking towards Victoria Viaduct
The back of the Green Room Theatre is directly left. Next along that side is the derelict Central Plaza Hotel, with scaffolding against the main building. The lane continues underneath Victoria Viaduct, where it joins Bush Brow.
By the bottom of the drainpipe on the left, a grey bird can just be made out - for a closer view, see
Image .
This lane was always very quiet because hardly anybody has a reason to go down there. Even more so now, since it is closed by barriers either side of the scaffolding.
