Former "Rose & Crown", Lowthians Lane - March 2018 (1)
One of the few surviving "lanes" in Carlisle, the first mention of a "Rose & Crown" in Lowthians Lane occurs in 1829, but the property is thought to be 18th Century. In February 1908, the local magistrates refused to renew its licence as the premises were said to be "badly ventilated, badly lighted, insanitary, structurally unfit, unnecessary for the requirements of the district and not capable of proper supervision". Nevertheless, the pub struggled on with final closure coming in June 1911 - before the advent of the State Management Scheme. The premises have been substantially altered since 1911 and are now presumably structurally fit! Coffee Sacks
To reach the toilets in John Watt's coffee shop, you have to walk past all sorts of interesting things including these sacks of coffee beans waiting to be roasted, ground and enjoyed by customers of this old-established local business.

John Watt & Son, Bank Street, Carlisle - June 2017
There are two distinct aromas in Carlisle - Carr's Biscuit Factory and freshly roasted coffee from the premises of John Watt & Son. Established in 1865, it is still going strong. Photograph is for record only - I have no connection with this business and cannot comment on their excellent products.
